NCAA Standings Basketball 2019: Complete Conference Rankings and Tournament Predictions

Looking back at the 2019 NCAA basketball season, I still get chills remembering how unpredictable those conference races felt. We had powerhouse programs battling emerging Cinderella stories, and frankly, my preseason predictions got completely turned upside down by March. I’ve followed college hoops for over a decade, and what stood out that year was the sheer depth of talent across multiple conferences—not just the usual suspects. The ACC, as expected, remained brutally competitive, but seeing the Big Ten rise with such force was something I hadn’t fully anticipated. Teams like Michigan State and Purdue weren’t just good; they were dominant in ways that reshaped the tournament conversation.

When I analyze conference standings, I always start with efficiency margins and strength of schedule, because raw win-loss records can be deceiving. The Big 12, for instance, had Texas Tech finishing strong with a 14-4 conference record, but what impressed me was their defensive rating—allowing just 89.1 points per 100 possessions, one of the stingiest marks I’ve seen in years. On the other hand, the SEC’s surge, led by Kentucky and Tennessee, showcased offensive firepower that made every matchup must-watch TV. I remember telling fellow analysts that the Vols’ 19-game win streak earlier that season wasn’t a fluke; their ball movement and three-point shooting were simply elite. Still, as much as I love data, there’s an emotional side to this sport that numbers can’t capture. Take the Pac-12, for example—Washington clinched the regular-season title, but their reliance on zone defense made me skeptical about a deep tournament run. Call it a hunch, but I’ve always believed that man-to-man schemes hold up better under March pressure.

Tournament predictions are where I let my biases show a bit. I was all in on Duke because of Zion Williamson’s generational talent, even though their defense had lapses. Gonzaga, as always, was efficient and well-coached, but I worried about their bracket luck. Then there were the underdogs—teams like Wofford, who went undefeated in the Southern Conference. Their senior-heavy roster had this poised, relentless energy that reminded me of past Cinderellas. But what really stuck with me was a quote from Villanova’s Collin Gillespie after they secured the Big East top seed. He said, “I’m just blessed, grateful that we’re here.” That humility echoes how unpredictable this tournament is; no matter the stats, players know that any game could be their last. It’s why I had Virginia winning it all—their methodical pace and resilience in close games felt like a championship recipe, even after their historic UMBC loss the previous year.

As the brackets took shape, I kept circling back to key metrics: offensive rebounding rates, free-throw accuracy in clutch moments, and coaching experience. Houston, for instance, grabbed over 35% of their missed shots, a huge advantage in single-elimination play. But let’s be real—sometimes, gut feelings trump analytics. I’d seen Tom Izzo work magic with Michigan State before, and despite their 16-4 Big Ten record, I had them falling short in the Elite Eight. Why? Their three-point defense was suspect, and in today’s game, that’ll bury you. On the flip side, I was higher on Auburn than most because of their tempo; forcing 18 turnovers per game can disrupt even the most disciplined teams. Sure enough, they made that Final Four run, though I’ll admit I didn’t see Virginia cutting down the nets until those final seconds against Texas Tech.

Reflecting on it now, the 2019 season taught me that balance—between star power and depth, between data and intuition—is what defines greatness in March Madness. The conference rankings set the stage, but the tournament rewrites the script every time. Whether you’re a stats geek or a casual fan, that’s the beauty of college basketball: it reminds us why we love sports.
